How the Ram Temple donation theft case exploded

Indian police in Uttar Pradesh have registered a criminal case and arrested eight people over alleged theft and misappropriation of donations at the Ram Mandir temple in Ayodhya, the same site long tied to India’s most heated religious battles.[3] Authorities say the accused were involved in counting and handling cash and valuables given by worshippers, including gold and silver offerings placed in donation boxes.[3] A member of the temple trust filed the formal police complaint that triggered the case.[1]

The police filing, called a First Information Report, lists charges under India’s new criminal code for theft, criminal breach of trust, dealing in stolen property, and conspiracy.[2] Several of those named were from modest backgrounds but reportedly bought expensive properties in Ayodhya and Lucknow after getting temple-related jobs, a pattern that raised red flags for investigators.[1] After the case was registered, officials said all eight named in the report were taken into custody as the probe widened.[2]

Inside the investigation: blocked cameras, missing valuables, and unanswered questions

The Uttar Pradesh government set up a Special Investigation Team after local reports and internal complaints raised alarms about irregularities in how donations were counted and logged.[20] Reporting on the team’s findings says some cash-counting staff allegedly recorded lower amounts on vouchers than the cash they actually collected, and that there were also questions about how gold, silver, and jewelry offerings were handled or possibly swapped.[20] Allegations of deleted or blocked camera footage from cash-counting areas added to concern about a cover-up.[20]

Media accounts say the Special Investigation Team recovered around two crore rupees in cash and gold after questioning trust officials and staff, though the final total of missing donations remains disputed and has not been officially confirmed by the government.[2] Some reports put the alleged theft as low as several crore rupees, while a petitioner has claimed a possible loss up to 200 crore rupees, showing just how wide the estimates run.[20][23] Authorities so far have declined to release a precise figure, but they have signaled that the matter involves a serious breach of public trust.[3]

Political firefight: opposition attacks and fractures inside the ruling camp

Opposition leaders in India have seized on the scandal to question not only the temple trust but also the broader Hindu nationalist project that made the Ayodhya temple a symbol in the first place.[22] Critics are demanding that India’s Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate take over with a full forensic audit, arguing a state-level team cannot probe politically connected figures without bias.[22] A public interest case has also pushed for a judicial commission led by a retired top judge to dig into donation records and land deals tied to the project.[23]

Inside the ruling camp, there are sharp differences in tone that mirror deeper tensions over how to handle corruption claims without hurting Hindu sentiment.[25] Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has warned that playing politics with the temple is an “insult” to Ayodhya, while still promising that no one guilty will be spared under the law, trying to defend faith while backing enforcement.[3][18] At the same time, senior construction committee leader Nripendra Misra has openly described what happened as “open robbery” and admitted that vigilance systems were basically “zero,” signaling a push for tougher internal controls even if it embarrasses allies.[25]

Temple leadership under pressure and what it means for believers

Facing rising public anger, the temple trust’s powerful general secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra resigned from their posts, saying they were taking moral responsibility for the mess while insisting the investigation run its full course.[11] Their resignations show how high the stakes have become, since this trust was created by the Indian government after the Supreme Court’s Ayodhya ruling to manage construction, donations, and daily worship at the new temple.[22] The trust still denies any organized fraud at the top level, blaming wrongdoing on individuals in the donation chain.[22]

For ordinary Hindu believers, the case cuts deep because the temple was built on years of sacrifice, court battles, and national pride, and many donated out of love for Lord Ram, not trust in politicians or bankers.[22] When offerings meant for God are stolen by insiders, it feels like a double betrayal — of faith and of the people’s goodwill. At the same time, the fact that the trust itself asked the state government to form a Special Investigation Team and that police have already made arrests shows that strong systems and political will can still move against corruption, even in sensitive religious spaces.[20][3]
