The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved SpaceX’s direct-to-phone service with T-Mobile, but only as “supplemental coverage from space,” meaning it must work alongside a ground-based carrier rather than replace one outright. Musk has been clear that the T-Mobile arrangement was never meant to last forever. He posted that Starlink’s direct-to-phone internet service would stay exclusive to T-Mobile “in the US for the first year, then other carriers thereafter,” adding that SpaceX is “starting off working with one carrier in each country” before opening things up wider.
SpaceX’s $17 billion spectrum purchase from EchoStar, the parent company of Boost Mobile, gives it the airwaves it would need to build an independent network instead of leaning on a partner carrier. Musk raised the idea of Starlink becoming a “global carrier” in its own right during a public podcast appearance discussing that deal.
For conservatives who have watched Big Tech and legacy telecom giants coast for years with limited competition, this is the kind of disruption free markets are supposed to produce. A private American company, funded by private investment and built on real engineering wins, is threatening to break up a comfortable arrangement between three massive carriers.
