Havana Syndrome Continues To Plague American Diplomats

According to a study, there is no medical proof for the enigmatic affliction known as “Havanna Syndrome.”

It is hard to say if the symptoms are psychosomatic or mass hypnosis, but no physical markers exist that can verify an actual physical ailment.

Experiencing unusual pressure and sound in their brains became a common complaint among US embassy workers in Cuba between 2016 and 2018. Headaches, memory loss, and eye impairments were among the long-term disabilities endured by some, while others only felt symptoms for a short time.

China, Colombia, France, and the United States have reported at least 200 cases of Havanna syndrome in the past eight years. Theories regarding the etiology of the symptoms have bolstered arguments that the diseases were caused by wavelength radiation from another nation deliberately causing harm.

Blood biomarkers and clinical evaluations of hearing, vision, hand-eye coordination, cognitive capacity, and balance were the focus of one research study, while brain imaging was the subject of the second. Neither research distinguished between a healthy control group and 80 individuals with the disease. Although the MRI scans of the affected diplomats did not reveal any scarring, the researchers from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) expressed their empathy for their health problems.

The lack of long-term signs on brain scans, which are common following trauma or stroke, was deemed as excellent news by the researchers. However, it left those afflicted feeling at a loss for answers.

There was no discernible or long-lasting change in pathophysiology, even if an “external phenomenon” was behind the symptoms.

The following symptoms cannot be explained by any other medical condition: persistent lethargy, depression, PTSD, vertigo, and dizziness.

Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PD) was identified in a subgroup of Havana syndrome sufferers (about 28%).

When specific brain networks do not display any damage yet fail to connect and communicate appropriately, this is the outcome, and it is associated with inner-ear issues and extreme stress.
