Woman Causes Online FURY Over Decision Not to Evacuate During Milton

A woman who refused to evacuate her home during Hurricane Milton has caused chaos online, with people expressing their anger about her decision.

They weren’t angry at her, by the way – they were angry because she revealed in the video that she believed she was going to die.

At a glance:

  • Caroline Calloway sparked outrage by refusing to evacuate during Hurricane Milton and chronicling the storm on social media.
  • Calloway posted videos on X and Instagram, sharing her experiences and promoting her upcoming book while the hurricane hit.
  • Her decision drew harsh criticism from followers, who accused her of using the hurricane for attention, though some fans urged her to stay safe.

Influencer Caroline Calloway has stirred controversy once again, this time for her refusal to evacuate during Hurricane Milton, which struck Florida’s Gulf Coast earlier this week. Calloway, 32, posted a video on Instagram where she claimed she was “going to die” because she chose not to leave her Sarasota home, located in a mandatory evacuation zone. Instead of seeking safety, she continued to document her experience through social media, telling her nearly 58,000 followers that she was “unfazed” by the dangerous storm.

In her posts, Calloway took the opportunity to promote her upcoming book, Elizabeth Wurtzel and Caroline Calloway’s Guide to Life, while joking about surviving the hurricane. Despite the hurricane’s life-threatening conditions, she dismissed concerns, telling followers she had “champagne and four generations of Floridians in her veins.” She also posted a video of the storm clearing up and moments of calm in her area, downplaying the danger.

This cavalier attitude quickly drew backlash from social media users, who criticized Calloway for making light of a devastating event. One user wrote, “Amazing that you found a way to make a hurricane that will devastate thousands of people ALL ABOUT YOU.” Others questioned her judgment, given that she lived in evacuation zone A, one of the first areas to be evacuated.

Some fans, however, expressed concern for her safety, pleading with her to take precautions as the storm made landfall. Hurricane Milton, which reached Category 3 status at its peak, brought significant flooding and damage to parts of Florida.

Calloway later explained that her refusal to evacuate stemmed from a traumatic experience during Hurricane Ian when she and her family were forced to evacuate after days without power or water. Despite surviving Hurricane Milton, Calloway’s decision has reignited criticism about her past controversies and her tendency to attract attention, even during dangerous situations.

She wasn’t the only one to do this, by the way…huge numbers of people chose to stay home. It worked out well for some, and less well for others…
