(PatrioticPost.com)- There was not one but two confirmed cases of officials on the National Security Council being struck by a mysterious condition called the Havana Syndrome.
CNN reported recently that the second official experienced the condition near the entrance to the grounds of the White House last year. That’s in addition to the official who suffered symptoms from the condition this April.
Just a few weeks after the 2020 presidential election, the NSC official was struck with rather severe symptoms of Havana Syndrome. The condition originally got its name after diplomats from both Canada and the U.S. who were stationed in Havana, Cuba, reported having symptoms of insomnia, headaches and vertigo.
The illness was first observed back in 2016, but no one has been able to figure out the cause. In total, the syndrome has affected more than 130 American troops, spies and diplomats.
CNN also reported that in 2019, two White House officials suffered from separate incidents of Havana Syndrome. One of those happened near the White House, and the other happened in a suburb in Virginia.
When news of the April case first broke last month, an official at the White House told The Hill:
“The health and well-being of American public servants is a paramount priority for the Biden administration. We take all reports of health incidents by our personnel extremely seriously. The White House is working closely with departments and agencies to address unexplained health incidents and ensure the safety and security of Americans serving around the world.”
Also in April, leaders on the Senate Intelligence Committee voted to “get to the bottom” of the Havana Syndrome case that was reported in April.
In a joint statement, Senators Mark Warner (a Democrat from Virginia) and Marco Rubio (a Republican from Florida), said:
“For nearly five years, we have been aware of reports of mysterious attacks on United States Government personnel in Havana, Cuba, and around the world. This pattern of attacking our fellow citizens serving our government appears to be increasing. The Senate Intelligence Committee intends to get to the bottom of this.”
The National Academy of Sciences conducted a study that was funded by the government that found that the most likely cause of the syndrome was microwave radiation. Most of the cases that are known have happened to employees of the CIA and State Department.
Members of the Senate Intelligence Committee said they wanted “to better understand the technology behind the weapon responsible for these attacks.” They continued:
“We will focus on ensuring we protect our personnel and provide the medical and financial support the victims deserve. Ultimately, we will identify those responsible for these attacks on American personnel and will hold them accountable.”
Over in the House, Adam Schiff, the chair of the Intelligence Committee in the lower chamber, said they “will continue to hold events and briefings on this subject, and we will follow the evidence wherever it may lead and ensure anyone responsible is held to account.”
The CIA recently opened a task force to support individuals in the agency who face an attack in the future, or who have already been the target of one. And the State Department appointed a senior adviser to oversee its own task force, which was already existing.
