Americans are noticing how rude and antisocial behavior has skyrocketed since the pandemic. Formerly civil people now refuse to obey etiquette rules, jostling other shoppers in stores without apologizing, jumping ahead of others in line, and behaving rudely on public transport like buses and trains.
Crass behavior, of course, is not limited to the United States, and passengers on a Greek ferry were recently treated to a frightening display of aggression when two men started a brawl so violent that the ferry captain had to turn the boat around head back to shore.
The incident took place August 14 aboard the Golden Star Ferries Super Express, a boat that takes passengers back and forth from the island of Tinos to Rafina on the mainland. It’s a three-hour trip, and passengers say two men began fighting while the ferry was en route after one asked the other to lower his voice.
Video circulating on social media shows passengers screaming and throwing items at each other, while the two men punched each other while standing on top of seats. Others were trying their best to get away from the area so they didn’t get punched themselves. A few passengers tried to calm the men and break up the fight but to no avail.
As usually happens, the dispute that started with just two people quickly grew. The Greek Coast Guard reported that they arrested 14 people, and three of those were children. Eight people were put in cuffs on the ferry while the remaining six were arrested once the ferry reached the Tinos dock. A total of 11 people are now charged with obstructing public transport.
British public transport users are having a rough time lately, too, as a fight broke out on August 12 aboard a commuter train on its way to Southampton. Sadly a 13-year-old girl was the target of a man who punched her for reasons that are not yet clear. British transport police are asking any witnesses or anyone in the public who has more information about the incident to contact them.
