(PatrioticPost.com)- A top Democrat was linked to a federal corruption case involving the University of Southern California (USC), where she allegedly received a large sum of money in exchange for supporting legislation that would have secured funding for the university, according to Breitbart.
Rep. Karen Bass and another politician’s daughter secured a $95,000 scholarship in exchange for their support on key legislation that would have benefited the university. Bass received the scholarship while in Congress back in 2011.
USC official, Marilyn Flynn, has since been indicted as well as local City Council member and power broker Mark Ridley-Thomas. Though the representative obtained permission from Congress to receive the money, she did not report it on her campaign financial disclosures for years. Now, Bass is reportedly linked to the case against Flynn.
Prosecutors in the case against Flynn believe that the former USC official hoped to obtain the congresswoman’s support through the free tuition money, according to prosecutors involved in the case. Bass did, in fact, support legislation that benefited the university and other private universities by giving them federal funding for social work “just as defendant Flynn wanted,” the filing states.
Thom Mrozek, director of media relations for the U.S. attorney’s office in L.A., said that Bass is not a target for investigation, but the Los Angeles Times notes that with Flynn’s trial in November, Bass’ “free master’s degree” could become part of it.
“In June, Flynn’s lawyers subpoenaed USC for correspondence pertaining to Bass’ scholarship and any honors or benefits given to the congresswoman, according to a copy of the subpoena filed last month,” the outlet reported.
Rep. Bass won her June 7 primary and is going up against Democratic challenger Rick Caruso. To make matters more interesting, Caruso was the chair of the USC board when the university reported the corruption to the FBI.
