There is much that the public does not yet know about the Gilgo Beach murders. And questions still remain over who is the “Long Island Serial Killer” (LISK) and the “Manorville Butcher.” But as more bodies are discovered, there may be two serial killers that authorities are connecting to the murders, according to Fox News.
Rex Heuermann was recently arrested as authorities suspect him to be connected to three victims in the adult industry. The bodies of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello were reportedly found on Long Island’s South Shore in 2010 after disappearing between 2009 and 2010. Heuermann may also be responsible for the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, who went missing in 2007, but there are no charges in that case at this time.
But six additional murders are prompting some to ask whether there is actually another murderer. Dismembered body parts were found along the South Shore in 2011. But the cold case has not brought forth many conclusions about the person responsible. While some of the parts were found on Gilgo Beach, others’ parts from the same victims were discovered many miles away. Jessica Taylor’s skull, hands, and torso were found along Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn in 2011, but her torso was discovered nearly a decade before that in Manorville.
This murderer was a mystery until a Manorville resident and carpenter was arrested in 2014 for killing two workers also in the adult industry named Rita Tangredi and Colleen McNamee. But it is still currently unclear whether John Bittrolff is responsible.
Interestingly, Bittrolff appeared in Heurmann’s internet searches. More than 200 Google searches were reportedly related to the Gilgo Beach murders. Josh Zeman, a filmmaker that made a 2017 document about the murders, made the connection between Heurmann’s Google searches and the bodies found along Ocean Parkway, further complicating the case.
