Pelosi Defends Swalwell Amid Chinese Spy Affair Report

( House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday she doesn’t “have any concern” about California Representative Eric Swalwell, despite recent revelations that he interacted with a Chinese national suspected of being a spy.

Pelosi said she was informed in 2015 about the situation, as were other leaders in Congress — at the same time Swalwell was by the FBI. The woman at the heart of the controversy, Christina Fang or Fang Fang, was being monitored by authorities who believed she was an operative of the Ministry of State Security in China.

She first met Swalwell when he was a city council member, and then remained close to him as he rose to a position in Congress. Fang apparently fundraised for Swalwell during his re-election campaign in 2014 and even placed an intern in his office, an Axios report said.

Fang is no longer in the country. Swalwell has said he cut off contact with her immediately once the FBI notified him of the situation. To date, he’s also not been accused of doing anything wrong in his dealings with her.

Fang allegedly tried to make inroads with up-and-coming politicians in hopes of one day gaining access to more classified information as they rose up the ladder. She’s also been accused of having sexual relations with politicians to get in their good graces.

On Thursday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy told Fox News that he wasn’t aware of the situation until it was revealed in the public this week. He said:

“I’m going to ask the FBI director to brief me. As a leader and member of the Gang of Eight, I did not know of this.”

Of greater concern is that Swalwell serves on the House Intelligence Committee. McCarthy continued:

“He is jeopardizing national security. When did Nancy Pelosi know of this, and why did she maintain him on the committee?”

Pelosi fired back at McCarthy Thursday, saying:

“I do think that it is unfortunate that Mr. McCarthy is trying to make an issue of this. But you know what he’s trying to do. He’s trying to deflect attention from the fact that he has QAnon in his delegation over there.”

Try as she might, Pelosi can’t deflect attention from this one over to Republicans. The ironic, and scary, thing about the situation is that Swalwell was a huge critic of President Donald Trump’s during the investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Now, after this news has come to light, Republicans are on the attack. As Ohio Representative Brad Wenstrup said about Swalwell:

“It was all Russia, Russia, Russia. He showed no concern about China, which if he went through an event of some type, then he should be greatly concerned about China, and we didn’t hear from him on that.”

Florida Senator Rick Scott went a step further, calling for the Speaker to take decisive action against Swalwell:

“Nancy Pelosi cannot allow him to stay on the intelligence committee, and he’s got to come clean with this.”
