House Rejects Impeachment Resolution

The House of Representatives on Tuesday overwhelmingly voted to kill a resolution to impeach President Donald Trump for launching military strikes on Iran without prior approval from Congress. In a striking bipartisan rebuke, 128 Democrats joined with Republicans to table the measure in a 344-79 vote.

The resolution was forced to the floor by Rep. Al Green (D-TX), who accused the President of committing high crimes and misdemeanors by violating the War Powers Clause of the Constitution. “I take no delight in what I’m doing,” Green said on the House floor before the vote. “I do this because no one person should have the power to take over 300 million people to war without consulting with the Congress of the United States of America.”

A Divided Democratic Caucus

While the vote was a legislative landslide, it exposed a deep fracture within the Democratic party. A progressive faction, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), passionately argued that Trump’s actions were an impeachable offense. “The President’s disastrous decision to bomb Iran without authorization is a grave violation of the Constitution and Congressional War Powers,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on social media, as reported by Breitbart.

However, Democratic leadership and a majority of the caucus viewed the effort as a distraction. According to The Associated Press, party leaders expressed wariness about pursuing another impeachment after two failed attempts during Trump’s first term, preferring to focus on other legislative priorities. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), while issuing a statement condemning the strikes as a “usurpation” of congressional power, was among the Democrats who voted to table the resolution.

Trump’s Taunting Response

President Trump quickly took to his Truth Social platform to mock the failed impeachment attempt and its supporters. He specifically targeted Rep. Ocasio-Cortez with a string of insults.

“Stupid AOC, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of the ‘dumbest’ people in Congress, is now calling for my Impeachment, despite the fact that the Crooked and Corrupt Democrats have already done that twice before,” Trump wrote. He then dared them to “go ahead and try Impeaching me” again. The swift and decisive end to the resolution highlights the ongoing battle over executive authority in matters of war and the deep political divisions that continue to define the current Congress.
