A tragic story out of New York reveals how two sisters, aged 19 and 17, were killed in a road accident in upstate New York’s Cayuga County on August 1. Hailey and Shelby Trumble died as a result of their injuries, according to a press release from the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.
The father of the two young women also reportedly learned of the horrific accident using an app that tracked the location of their phones.
According to the August 5th press release, the young women were driving a 2005 Chevy Cobalt on Ira Hill Road near the town of Ira. Another vehicle “crested a hill and crossed into the opposite lane,” striking a second vehicle.
“That vehicle, a West bound 2016 Jeep Cherokee, was occupied by Robin Latham, age 59 from Tully NY. What caused the Trumble vehicle to cross into the oncoming lane is still under investigation,” the press release explained.
While both women died as a result of their injuries, Latham was taken by paramedics to Syracuse University Hospital where she remains in stable condition but is being treated for multiple serious injuries.
During an interview with upstate news outlet Syracuse.com, the father of the two women, Brian Tumble, said that he had sent multiple text messages to his daughters that day. The par were headed back home after a day at an amusement park in Rochester, and their father grew concerned about their lack of a response. That’s when he used the Find My Friends app to find their exact whereabouts.
After finding the location, Brian Tumble got in his car and drove there. At this point, the father was met by police deputies who had begun to cordon off the roads.
Tumble described the incident as a “tremendous loss” and said that things were “never going to be the same again.”
A statement from the Hannibal Central School District also praised the two girls, who graduated in 2023 and 2024, and described the news as “incredibly sad” for their students, colleagues, and faculty.
