Man Dies After Getting COVID Vaccine

( The Hong Kong government revealed on March 2 that an elderly man died after taking a Chinese-made COVID-19 vaccine. Just two days after receiving the Chinese jab, the man passed away and investigations are ongoing into the cause of the death.

Officials speculate that it could be a result of taking the vaccine, though that is not yet confirmed. If it is confirmed, it would not mean that Western vaccines are necessarily compromised in any way.

Hong Kong’s government began vaccinating at-risk groups on February 26, which includes people over the age of 60.

The Chinese-made Sinovac COVID-19 is understood to be 50.6% effective, which is substantially less effective than vaccines produced in Europe and the United States. There have also been several reports of being suffering serious side effects, and even dying, as a result of taking the less effective vaccine.

In February, an Indonesian nurse died after receiving the vaccine. 33 year-old Erny Kusuma Sukma Dewi tested positive for the Chinese coronavirus after being vaccinated. Indonesian media outlets reported how she was young, healthy, and had no history of illness before falling sick.

The nurse likely caught the virus after caring for COVID-19 patients in a hospital. She died before she was able to receive a second injection, after visiting a local hospital to receive treatment for her fever, cough, and difficulty breathing.

Hong Kong health authorities said that the death of a 63-year-old man who received the vaccine was being investigated. The patient is understood to have been undergoing treatment by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Hong Kong, and was suffering from respiratory diseases.

“At the moment, the casual relationship with the vaccination could not be ascertained,” a statement from the hospital said.

More than 40,000 people have received the vaccine since its rollout on Friday, in Hong Kong. Over 254,000 people have registered to receive the vaccine.

However, with a population of almost 7 million, there is a long way for Hong Kong to go. In the United States, thanks to former President Donald Trump’s operation warp speed, more than a million people per day were receiving the COVID-19 vaccine as of late January.
