(PatrioticPost.com)- Republicans finally voted on nominating Rep. Kevin McCarthy for Speaker of the House in a 188-31 vote, according to The Gateway Pundit. In addition, House Republican Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana was unanimously elected by a voice vote and National Republican Congressional Committee Chair Tom Emmer was elected House Republican whip.
McCarthy still has to secure 218 votes to be the speaker and will consequently spend the next month trying to reportedly court those who did not vote for him ahead of the official vote in January 2023. Rep. Andy Biggs, a former chair of the right-wing House Freedom Caucus, was nominated by Rep. Chip Roy in the hopes to demonstrate the opposition McCarthy faces.
Conservative politicians have already outlined the concessions they expect McCarthy to make if he wants their support.
The Republicans secured the House majority by a narrow margin in the midterm elections, 218 seats to the Democrats’ 212. In a stunning upset, the GOP failed to gain the Senate after a series of losses in Arizona, Nevada, and Pennsylvania.
McCarthy is facing some criticism from some conservatives over his previous positions. The Gateway Pundit reported that the House Speaker hopeful was once against impeaching Joe Biden and called for President Trump to resign after the January 6 riot. The outlet also claims that McCarthy spent millions in the election to defeat pro-Trump Republicans.
Steven Bannon, the former White House strategist under then-President Trump, joined House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy in the House’s bid to impeach President Biden, according to Newsweek. The report comes contrary to the claims made by Gateway Pundit over McCarthy’s alleged opposition to Biden’s impeachment.
During an interview, McCarthy said that Republicans will not impeach the president for “political purposes” in the same way Democrats did with Trump.
Bannon took to Gettr to showcase his agreement with McCarthy and suggested that the politician meant an impeachment is only the table after investigations are conducted into “the invasion of the Southern Border, Hunter Biden’s Laptop from Hell, [and] Fauci’s lies during the pandemic.”
