Juan Williams, one of the hosts of “The Five” on the Fox News Channel, lied recently during a segment about the Goya food boycott, claiming that President Trump called Mexicans “rapists and thieves.” The claim goes all the way back to a speech made by the president in 2015 in which he said some illegal aliens coming over the border were rapists – which is a fact.
On Friday, Williams and his co-hosts were discussing the boycott of Goya food, a Latin food company whose CEO, Bob Unanue, recently made positive comments about the president. When Unanue refused to backtrack and attack the president, radical left-wing activists and Democrats urged a boycott of the brand.
Jeanine Pirro, who was co-hosting the show, said that the left’s hate “is so dug in” and said that the political Right didn’t do this kind of thing to Obama. “But this is like cancel them out, boycott them, make them lose their jobs,” Pirro said.
Pirro asked Williams if he was comfortable with the situation.
“I don’t like boycotts if that’s what you’re asking,” he said. “But let me just say this, we live in politically polarized times, and if you’re talking about who likes division, President Trump pushes buttons of division and polarization quite regularly. I think you’ll remember he started his campaign by going after Latin immigrants. He said Mexicans were rapists and thieves.”
The comment immediately sparked a response from co-hosts who reminded him that Trump didn’t say that. Because he didn’t.
During the speech that Williams referenced, President Trump said the country is “in serious trouble” and that America doesn’t “have victories anymore.” He cited the fact that the United States was losing in trade to China, losing in the car manufacturing industry, and losing at the border with Mexico.
Trump said:
“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs; they’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
At no point did he say all Mexicans are rapists and thieves, but instead acknowledged the problem of illegal aliens being sent from Mexico into the United States who go on to commit crime in large numbers.
