(PatrioticPost.com)- A genealogist who conducted an exhaustive review into President Joe Biden’s family lineage told Politico this week that some of Biden’s ancestors on his father’s side were slave owners.
That makes both the President and Vice President descendants of slave owners. Who’da thunk it?
Genealogist Alexander Bannerman, who along with presidential lineage expert Gary Boyd Roberts, co-authored an article this past winter on Biden’s ancestry for the New England Historic Genealogical Society’s American Ancestors Magazine.
Bannerman told Politico that he happened across the findings of Biden’s slave-owning ancestors when he was looking through census records and slave schedules from Maryland.
From his research Bannerman discovered an 1800 census showing that Biden’s great-great-great grandfather Jesse Robinett owned two slaves in Allegany County. Another great-great-great grandfather, Thomas Randle, owned a 14-year-old boy in Baltimore County.
Considering that only between one and six percent of Americans owned slaves, it’s pretty amazing that Bannerman was able to find two slave-owner ancestors in Joe Biden’s family tree.
Bannerman also discovered that in 1860, great-great-great grandpa Randle and his family moved somewhere else in Baltimore County. And at that point they owned a single male slave.
Both Bannerman and Gary Boyd Roberts didn’t include Biden’s family ties to slavery in their article for American Ancestors Magazine. The authors argued that it is fairly common for Americans with colonial-era roots to have ancestors who were slave owners. The article does, however, point out that Biden’s ancestry also links him to Confederate President Jefferson Davis which, in today’s climate is reason enough to cancel Biden.
Biden’s ancestor Allen Robanet was distantly related to Varina Anne Banks Howell, who was Jefferson Davis’ wife.
Despite finding two slave owners in Biden’s roots, Bannerman argued that Biden’s ties to slavery are still not nearly as extensive as many other American families.
Other noted politicians also have ancestral links to slavery. In addition to Kamala Harris’ Jamaican ancestors, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, as well as Texas perpetual candidate Robert “Beto” O’Rourke also have ancestors who owned slaves.
Thus far, the White House has not commented on Joe Biden’s slave-owning forebearers.
