(PatrioticPost.com)- President Joe Biden thought he could get Iran around the negotiating table to discuss a return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), or the “Iran Nuclear Deal,” but it’s looking less likely by the day that it will ever happen.
Just as U.S. officials traveled to Vienna to begin discussions with Iran, the Deputy Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi issued a statement saying that there will be no talks with the U.S. – either direct or indirect. It means that even the officials from France, Germany, Russia, and China who were expected to engage in indirect talks won’t be able to make any headway with the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.
The Iranian government official once again confirmed that they would only return to the negotiating table if the United States immediately lifts all sanctions on the country.
It looks like President Joe Biden is learning why former President Donald Trump was tough on Iran.
“We are negotiating with the Joint Commission, meaning the 4+1 countries, we will relay to them our demand and condition for returning to the nuclear deal,” Araghchi confirmed.
“Our demand is that America must first resume complying with its entire commitments,” he added.
The surprise statement – well, it was a surprise to Biden, at least – came after bot the United States and Iran agreed to send delegates to Vienna where they would discuss options for resolving the issue of Iran enriching uranium to levels as high as 20%.
“This is just the first step…it’s going to be a difficult path because of how much time has gone by and how much mutual distrust there is, but our goal is to discuss indirectly with our European and other partners who will discuss with Iran to see whether we could define those steps that both sides are going to have to take,” U.S. Special Envoy for Iran Robert Malley said.
The JCPOA was implemented and agreed during the Obama administration, but Iran repeatedly violated provisions of the agreement, specifically those relating to the enrichment of uranium and the development of what could ultimately become a nuclear weapon.
Did President Biden think Iran would just back down and agree to yet another pointless deal?
