Two undocumented Jordanians were released from federal jail after posting thousands of dollars in bond. They are facing charges related to an attempted breach of Marine Corps Base Quantico in May.
Mohammad Khair Dabous, 28, and Hasan Yousef Hamdan, 32, were released from ICE detention despite their immigration status. According to law enforcement sources, Dabous is subject to removal proceedings for overstaying his student visa and illegally crossing the country in April. Hamdan also entered the country illegally in April. Their immigration statuses led to their arrest on May 3 for trespassing onto the military post, and ICE authorities then took custody of them.
Federal law enforcement sources indicate that the two were freed in early June after posting bond in their ICE cases. Hamdan’s bond was set at $15,000 and Dabous’ at $10,000.
The motive for the men’s alleged attempt to enter the base remains a mystery.
The FBI Laboratory and Academy are housed on the site. There is also a location for the Defense Intelligence Agency and other significant commands of the U.S. Marine Corps, notably the unit responsible for flying the Marine One presidential helicopter.
Court records show that on July 22, the judge released Hamdan and Dabous on the condition that they appear in court for their immigration proceedings and refrain from visiting Quantico or any other military installations. They were initially charged with misdemeanor trespassing on military property, and federal prosecutors agreed to release them under those conditions.
Hamdan was purportedly released in April from jail because there wasn’t enough room for him.
The court documents also reveal that they are forbidden from trespassing on any federal property, including the Quantico Center.
Quantico base spokesperson Captain Michael Curtis said that the two Jordanians lied to guards, claiming they were there to make a delivery for an Amazon subcontractor. The guards quickly realized the two weren’t supposed to be there.
Contrary to orders from military guards, the men in the box truck attempted to drive onto the base but were halted by anti-vehicle barriers.
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin noticed the event and demanded an explanation from the Biden administration, criticizing the federal government for its “failure to disclose the immigration status of those involved.”
Court proceedings for the two defendants are set to take place in September.
