GOP nominee Donald Trump can count on getting a vote from someone who not too long ago seemed like would be voting for whomever ran against him.
Over the weekend, conservative media personality Ann Coulter said that she believes that Trump is an “awful, awful person.” Yet, she’s going to be voting for him during this November’s presidential election, because he picked Ohio Senator JD Vance as his vice presidential candidate.
Appearing on the “Washington Journal” program on C-SPAN on Sunday, Coulter explained why she would be voting for Trump, even after she has spent so much time railing against him and urging other Republicans to challenge him for the GOP primary.
The hosts of the show asked her point blank who she would be voting for come November, and Coulter responded:
“Donald Trump, because if he loses he will be running again in four years, and then he will have lost four successive elections for us. Truthfully, I really like his choice of JD Vance, which I recommended back in May. Can’t trust Trump as far as I can throw him, but I do trust JD Vance to care about the left-behind people.”
That’s hardly a ringing endorsement of Trump, but it is at least one more vote that the GOP nominee can apparently count on.
Essentially, what Coulter said on the TV program was that since Trump can only serve four more years in the White House — since the Constitution limits presidents to two terms, whether they are consecutive or not — she believes it would be best to let him serve out his maximum time now.
If Trump were to lose, Coulter posited that he would likely run for president again in 2028, which she believes would result in the Republicans losing another presidential election — and potentially more seats in Congress and in gubernatorial races across the country.
In other words, four more years of Trump in an official role now would be better for the long-term future of the GOP than having to deal with the potential fallout of having Trump stick around for another major election cycle.
And, since Coulter likes and trusts Vance, she presumably would like to see the Ohio senator run for president as the GOP nominee in 2028 — which he would be in a prime position to do since he would be serving as the vice president.
Coulter used to be a huge backer of Trump. She even co-authored a book in 2016 that was very pro-Trump called “In Trump We Trust: E Pluribus Awesome!”
During her Sunday interview, though, she said that she thinks Trump has moved very far away from what she praises in the book. As Coulter said:
“I wish Republican politicians would read it. I gave a copy to some of my favorite Republicans. I do think the 2016 Trump campaign, it was one of the greatest campaigns in world history — in part because it really changed the Republican Party to a party I preferred.
“So, I loved Trump coming out and saying, ‘Oh, I’m rich and going to fix the country. But, the main reason — and if you read the book, by the way, I make it very clear that personally, Trump is an awful, awful person. We are making an exception this one time, because we need a wall on the border.”
