Facebook Algorithm Change Leads To Disaster

(PatrioticPost.com)- Last week, the Verge reported that for a brief time on Wednesday, Facebook users found their newsfeeds crammed with user posts directed to celebrity accounts that included silly memes, cryptocurrency ads, and PayPal donation requests.

According to Meta spokesman Alexandru Voica, the glitch was caused by a “configuration change” that was resolved after about three hours.

But in that three hours, users discovered how to exploit the glitch to send memes to celebrities that quickly went viral by appearing on the newsfeed of every follower those celebrities have.

According to the Verge, one viral meme image showed a turkey sandwich with a caption urging others to share the image on another celebrity’s Facebook page. And because of the “configuration change,” all the people following that celebrity’s account would see the meme on their newsfeed.

Other users decided to make some fast cash from the glitch by posting PayPal donation links or ads for cryptocurrency projects to celebrities’ Facebook accounts which would then appear on their followers’ newsfeeds as well.

While it wasn’t an outage in the traditional way, some Facebook users reported the problem to Downdetector starting around two in the morning Eastern Time on Wednesday. The dashboard status for Facebook, however, did not report any outage issues during the time the glitch was active. By 5:15 am Eastern Time, the glitch was resolved.
