(PatrioticPost.com)- A Department of Justice press release just revealed that Babak Broumand, a former agent from the bureau who retired after serving for 20 years as a special agent, has been arrested on a federal criminal charge.
Broumand is accused of conspiring to accept over $200,000 in gifts and cash, and allegedly also accepting those gifts in return for providing sensitive information to a lawyer who had ties to organized criminal gangs in Armenia.
To cover his tracks, Broumand reportedly filed incorrect financial disclosure forms and purposely hid the additional income so that the FBI wouldn’t see what he was up to.
According to the indictment, the individual that Broumand exchanged information with was a criminal “associated with a criminal organization.” He reportedly gave a motorcycle worth $36,000 to Broumand and even gave him $30,000 to use as a down payment on a second home he purchased in Lake Tahoe.
The man became a licensed lawyer in 2016, and the indictment adds that he gave cash gifts to various bank accounts and paid for luxurious hotel stays, transportation, and even escort services. The total value of all the gifts combined were more than $200,000.
For an FBI agent to betray the nation so badly is incomprehensible to many who served alongside Broumand. United States Attorney Nick Hanna said that this former agent is accused of “violating” the sacred trust between people and FBI agents, and for not placing the country and her people before his own self-interest.
Hanna added that the complaint details a “long-running and multi-faceted scheme that tarnished the badge.”
Thankfully, Paul Delacourt, the Assistant Director overseeing the Los Angeles FBI field office said that they have not seen any evidence to suggest other officers committed the same crime.
Broumand faces a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison.
