Eric Roberts has issued a public apology to his sister, Julia Roberts, in his new memoir, Runaway Train: Or, The Story of My Life So Far. In the book, Roberts reflects on their difficult relationship, acknowledging the rift that developed between the siblings over the years.
According to People, the Runaway Train actor addresses their tumultuous upbringing, detailing their troubled childhood with parents Walter Roberts and Betty Lou Bredemus. He describes their father as a “screwed-up individual” and highlights how their parents’ divorce affected the family. While Eric went to live with their father, Julia stayed with their mother, who later remarried.
Roberts opens up about his struggles with drug addiction and the consequences it had on his personal relationships. He admits that his substance abuse made him “dangerous to be around,” straining his relationship with both Julia and their half-sister, Nancy Motes. He also recounts a custody battle for his daughter, actress Emma Roberts, which further damaged his bond with Julia, who sided with Emma’s mother during the dispute.
Eric Roberts acknowledges past mistakes, including a comment he made about his sister’s success, claiming that “if it wasn’t for me, there would be no Julia Roberts.” He now regrets this statement, calling it “asinine” and hoping that Julia will accept his apology.
Despite the strained relationship, Eric expresses a desire to “move aside proudly and with grace,” recognizing that he will likely always be known as Julia Roberts’ brother and Emma Roberts’ father. Writing the memoir, he says, is part of his effort to mend these relationships and take responsibility for his actions.
In recent interviews, Eric Roberts has refrained from discussing his sister and daughter, respecting their wishes to keep family matters private. However, he continues to express pride in Emma’s acting career, stating in a podcast earlier this year that he’s amazed by her talent.
