Cowboys Training Camp Woes Continue as Hotel Catches Fire

The Dallas Cowboys are in training camp which always involves putting out metaphorical fires, but they had to contend with the real thing the night of August 20.

While staying at the usual hotel in Oxnard, California, that the team uses every year, one of the rooms caught fire. Thankfully, no one was injured and the fire did not spread beyond one room. There is no word on what may have caused the fire.

This year the Cowboys are trying to tighten their game for 2024 after losing the first-round playoffs in January to the Green Bay Packers. And they’re having to do it without their star wide receiver, CeeDee Lamb, who’s waiting for a new contract and off the team’s roster until it is inked.

Lamb and the team are in a heated disagreement, and the Cowboys have put Lamb on the “did not report” list. The receiver has not attended any of the team’s voluntary workouts, and has not attended the required “minicamp.” Now he’s refusing to attend the regular yearly training camp, which might cost him up to $40,000 a day for missing mandatory practices. Lamb can afford it, though, considering that he is to be paid almost $18 million in this fifth year of his contract as a rookie.

The dispute between Lamb and the Cowboys has spilled over onto social media, with Lamb reacting in what appeared to be a sarcastic way to statements by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. In a posted video, Jones said there is “no urgency” to extending Lamb’s contract, to which the receiver replied “lol.” Lamb has also removed the Cowboys name from his social media profiles.

Though not confirmed, reports are circulating that the Cowboys have offered Lamb an extension on his contract that would make him one of the top-earning players in the NFL at $33 million per year. Only Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings would make more at $35 million per year. So far, Lamb has not signed.
