(PatrioticPost.com)- On Monday, President Joe Biden made a pretty serious claim: Vladimir Putin is currently considering using chemical and biological weapons against Ukraine.
Biden didn’t provide any evidence to support to his claims. Instead, he pointed to the Russian president’s false accusations regarding Ukraine haven’t these same weapons as an indication that the Communist country might use them.
At a Business Roundtable event earlier this week, Biden said:
“[Putin’s] back is against the wall, and now he’s talking about new false flags he’s setting up, including asserting that we in America have biological as well as chemical weapons in Europe. Simply not true.
“They are also suggesting that Ukraine has biological and chemical weapons in Ukraine. That’s a clear sign he’s considering using both of those.”
Biden’s comments aren’t altogether out of order. In fact, many of America’s top allies have accused Russia in the past of spreading misinformation that Ukraine has biological weapons at their disposal. These officials, and many top defense officials in the U.S., say that they are worried Putin is doing this to potentially justify his own use of chemical or biological weapons in future attacks.
The defense ministry in Russia has already accused Ukraine of attempting to plan an attack using chemicals against their own people, and then accusing Russia of being the one that initiated the attack. Russia hasn’t provided any evidence to back up those claims.
U.S. officials have warned Russia that any use of biological or chemical weapons would result in harsh consequences for them. Jake Sullivan, the U.S. national security adviser, told that to the Russia Security Council’s secretary, Nikolay Patrushev, a few weeks ago.
At the Business Roundtable, Biden also said that Russia ended up using a hypersonic missile to blow up a weapons depot over the weekend “because it’s the only thing they can get through with absolute certainty.”
Following the meeting, a top official in the Biden administration clarified that the president only meant to confirm the advanced missile attack was used. He added that it’s still uncertain what the outcome of the missile launch actually was.
Russia has claimed that the missile attack destroyed the weapons depot, but a senior defense official in the U.S. raised questions about whether that was actually true or not.
Russia has caused major destruction throughout Ukraine in the three weeks since it launched its unprovoked invasion of its neighbor. While many people have died and been displaced due to the attack, Russia’s military hasn’t made the headway it was hoping to make at the outset.
The country hasn’t been able to capture any of Ukraine’s major cities yet, and their advance has stalled for the most part.
Earlier this week, Ukraine said it wouldn’t agree to the ultimatums Russia issued to them in “peace talks,” which were held to potentially stop the bombardment that’s happening in the port city of Mariupol.
Ukraine has refused to back down so far, even as Russia doesn’t seem intent on easing up on their attack any time soon.
