(PatrioticPost.com)- As Mayor Lori Lightfoot frets over the lack of City Hall reporters who “look like me,” a lot of people who do look like Lori are getting gunned down in the streets of the city she is supposed to be running.
Over the last weekend, forty-five people were shot in the city of Chicago including three fatalities.
The weekend’s toll included a mass shooting in Chatham where two males approached a group of people and opened fire killing a 29-year-old woman and injuring nine others.
Among those wounded in the weekend’s violence were a sixteen-year-old girl who was shot three times; a 14-year-old boy was grazed by a bullet while playing outside with his friends; and two 17-year-old boys were struck by bullets during a drive-by shooting on the Southwest Side.
After three consecutive decades of declining violence, shootings skyrocketed in Chicago in 2020. By year’s end the city recorded 774 murders – an increase of more than 50% from 2019. The uptick in murders was felt citywide with twenty of the 22 CPD police districts recording more murders in 2020 than 2019.
Overall, by December 27, 2020 3,237 people were shot in Lightfoot’s city – up from 2,120 in 2019.
And thus far, 2021 is shaping up to be even worse.
Between January 1 and June 11, 1,538 people were shot in Chicago – 184 more shootings than recorded during the same period of 2020. Among those, 289 lost their lives – 16 more than were killed in the same period last year.
The weekend of May 21 was Chicago’s deadliest weekend of the year. By its end, at least 12 were dead and another 42 wounded.
Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown blamed the rise in shootings on “too many illegal guns in the wrong hands.”
Though, another more likely reason gun crimes are rampant might be Chicago State’s Attorney Kim Foxx dismissing thousands of felonies cases that would have been prosecuted prior to her tenure.
On Tuesday, June 15, both Mayor Lightfoot and Superintendent Brown blistered Foxx for her refusal to prosecute those arrested for nonviolent gun possession. Despite the Chicago Police Department making more and more gun-related arrests, Foxx is not pursuing prosecution for those without a criminal record.
Foxx believes that any non-violent gun offenders arrested must not be the cause of the rising gun crimes in the city, therefore she does not want to pull them into the criminal justice system – despite the fact that they were arrested for illegally possessing a firearm.
“Any thoughts that illegal gun possession doesn’t drive violence is ridiculous,” Superintendent Brown said. “We’re less safe when people illegally possess guns.”
Kim Foxx, a close ally of Michelle Obama’s, is also the State’s Attorney who refused to bring charges against Jussie Smollett for staging a faked hate crime in early 2019.
