Carjacking Goes Wrong

(PatrioticPost.com)- A video showing a man getting the crap beat out of him in the middle of downtown Chicago went viral on social media last week. And while it was claimed that the man was a carjacker, the online claims don’t match up with the police report.

The video shows a man getting knocked to the ground and dragged across the street to the sidewalk where he is repeatedly attacked by two men. One of the men then picks him up and slams his head into one of the metal pillars that support the elevated train tracks.

According to CWB Chicago, a website that tracks crime in Chicago, the online accounts of what occurred vary. Some claimed the man was attempting to steal a car when he was confronted by the other men. Others claim that the man tried to carjack someone, but the people in the car fought back.

But online accounts don’t appear to be correct.

CWB Chicago did some digging and found out that the man who was attacked contacted the police and filed a report. And his report, along with the Chicago Police Department’s account, differs wildly from the online claims.

One significant difference is that the men who carried out the attack didn’t leave the scene in a vehicle. Instead, according to a Chicago police officer who saw the CCTV footage, the two men walked away from the scene.

So obviously they didn’t stop a carjacker from stealing their car.

The incident took place on Saturday, January 14 at 10:19 am on the corner of State and Van Buren in downtown Chicago. Because several witnesses reported the incident to 911 as it was unfolding, the police arrived at the scene quickly where they found the 24-year-old man whose head was slammed into the pillar.

According to a spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department, the man said that while he was walking through the loop, he was approached from behind and struck with a “hard object.” His backpack fell onto the street and one of the men grabbed his leg and dragged him onto the sidewalk where he was kicked and punched in the face and head before one of the men picked him up and slammed his head into the pillar.

The CPD spokesperson said a third person stole the man’s backpack, then just before police arrived, all three fled the scene, heading west on foot along Van Buren. The suspects were last seen on CCTV crossing Clark Street.

According to CWB Chicago, the police had no record of any reported carjacking attempts or auto thefts in the area of the incident.
